Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation increases the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Breast augmentation can also correct asymmetrical breasts and improve overall contour. At our facility in Suffolk County, Long Island, the breast augmentation procedure is performed through a small incision at the base of the breast, in the axilla (under the arm), or at the lower part of the areola. The incision may be as small as one inch in length and barely visible. To achieve the most natural and aesthetically pleasing results, existing breast size and shape, overall body dimensions and patient preference are carefully considered before breast augmentation is performed.
Patients may choose from a complete line of silicone gel implants, as well as saline-filled implants. Both types of implants are available in three different dimensions: moderate profile PLUS, high profile, and moderate profile. Moderate profile PLUS, the most commonly used of the three, offers the ideal balance between projection and width, while high profile implants are used commonly in reoperative procedures, as well as in particular anatomical circumstances. Breast Augmentation with Silicone Gel Implants
In November of 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved silicone gel implants for use in all cosmetic breast procedures. Since then, acceptance of the use of silicone gel implants has steadily increased among both medical professionals and patients.
These implants were originally taken off the market, and only in the United States, to give the FDA a chance to investigate allegations that silicone gel implants could potentially cause auto-immune diseases. The FDA and the plastic surgery community spearheaded extensive investigations and clinical trials – many in which Dr. Landsman participated – eventually finding these allegations to be untrue. The use of silicone gel implants was concluded to be safe, and they returned to the market in 2006.
Silicone gel implants offer a number of advantages over saline implants, including:
- A more natural feel
- No risk of visible rippling
- Superior durability and a lack of deflation

Breast Lift with or without Implants
A breast lift, also called mastopexy, can correct sagging breasts caused by weight gain followed by weight loss, pregnancy, or nursing. Women who feel self-conscious about drooping breasts, called breast ptosis, may desire firmer, shapelier breasts. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, the colored skin surrounding the nipple.
The breast lift procedure, which utilizes minimal incision techniques, is often combined with breast implants to obtain dramatic improvement in breast aesthetics; patients choosing to combine the breast lift procedure with implants can choose either silicone gel or saline implants.
